About Archaeological Museum of Rhodes
Ancient marble gods fill the Knights' vast Gothic hospital ward, from the crouching Aphrodite of Rhodes to a Helios head that later became an unlikely vaporwave-album icon.
The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is housed in the medieval Hospital of the Knights of St John. Construction of the hospital began in 1440 and was completed in the time of Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson (1476-1503). It is one of the finest surviving Gothic hospital complexes, with a long vaulted infirmary ward opening onto an arcaded central courtyard. The collections are drawn largely from the ancient cities of Ialysos and Kamiros, together with a notable group of statues.
The museum's signature sculpture is the 'Aphrodite of Rhodes', a crouching Aphrodite carved in the first century BC after a third-century BC prototype associated with the sculptor Doidalses. A separate sea-worn standing Aphrodite is popularly linked to the 'Marine Venus' of Lawrence Durrell's 1953 book, though the identification is debated. Other highlights include the funerary stele of Krito and Timarista, a Hellenistic mosaic of Bellerophon on Pegasus, and a marble Head of Helios. The Hospital lies within the UNESCO World Heritage Medieval City of Rhodes, inscribed in 1988.
Did you know? A marble Head of Helios in the collection went viral far from Rhodes: it appeared on the 2011 cover of Macintosh Plus's vaporwave album 'Floral Shoppe' and became an internet-culture icon.
