About Hippocrates Square (Plateia Ippokratous)

The Old Town's lively heart, where cafes ring an ornamental fountain below the Knights' old courthouse, just inside the Marine Gate where every main lane converges and pigeons gather.

Hippocrates Square, or Plateia Ippokratous, is the social heart of the medieval Old Town, crowded with cafes and restaurants just inside the Marine Gate, where the main streets converge. It is dominated by the Kastellania, a building of the Knights Hospitaller that served as their commercial tribunal and courthouse; restored by the Italians in the early twentieth century, it now houses the public library and archives. Its centrepiece is an ornamental fountain, the Sintrivani.

Under Ottoman rule the square was known as Mosque Square, and the Italians called it Piazza del Fuoco. After a devastating fire in 1924, it was rebuilt by the Italian administration under the architect Armando Bernabiti; the ornamental fountain and a grand staircase are essentially the only surviving remnants of the medieval Kastellania complex. The square sits within the UNESCO World Heritage Medieval City of Rhodes, and its modern name honours the ancient physician Hippocrates.
