About Street of the Knights (Odos Ippoton)
A cobbled two-hundred-metre climb lined with the inns of the Knights' nations, so flawlessly Gothic it looks staged, and in part it is: the 1930s Italians restored it.
Odos Ippoton, the Street of the Knights, is a cobbled medieval street about 200 metres long. It runs uphill between the Hospital of the Knights, now the Archaeological Museum, and the Palace of the Grand Master, within the Collachium, the walled Upper Town that the Knights Hospitaller reserved for themselves. The street is lined with the inns, or auberges, of the 'tongues' of the Order of St John, its national divisions. These numbered seven, later eight, among them France, Provence, Auvergne, Italy, Aragon, England and Germany. The best-preserved is the Inn of France, whose marble frontispiece carries carved coats of arms and the fleur-de-lis of the Grand Masters.
The street's pristine Gothic appearance owes much to a thorough restoration by the Italian administration in the 1930s, which removed later Ottoman additions while preserving the Gothic character of the facades. UNESCO describes the Upper Town, together with the Palace and the Great Hospital, as one of the most beautiful urban ensembles of the Gothic period.
Did you know? The street's stone facades were the inns of the Order's 'tongues', its national branches. France, Provence, Auvergne, Italy, Aragon, England and Germany each kept a lodge here; the Inn of France survives best.
