About Rhodes Aquarium (Hydrobiological Station)

A striking 1930s Italian research institute shaped like a ship at the island's northern cape, its cave-like basement aquarium holding Mediterranean sea life where two seas meet.

The Rhodes Aquarium occupies a distinctive 1930s building at Cape Milos, the northern tip of the island, at the end of Elli Beach. Designed by the Italian architect Armando Bernabiti and built in 1934-1935 during the Italian administration, it opened in 1937 as the Royal Biological Research Institute of Rhodes, studying Aegean hydrology, sponges and fisheries. Its curved walls, circular porthole-like windows and central cylindrical tower give it a deliberately marine appearance, variously described as Art-Deco and International Style.

The public aquarium occupies the basement, laid out as a corridor built to resemble an underwater sea-cave and holding around 80,000 litres of filtered seawater with Mediterranean species. Since 1963 the building has been the Hydrobiological Station of Rhodes, now operated by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, functioning as a research station, public aquarium and museum. Among its exhibits is a roughly 2,000-year-old skeleton of a Mediterranean monk seal found in a grave at the port of Rhodes.

Did you know? The museum's most unusual exhibit is a roughly 2,000-year-old skeleton of a Mediterranean monk seal, discovered in a grave at an archaeological site at the port of Rhodes itself.
