About Church of the Annunciation (Evangelismos)

A Gothic church built in the 1920s to replace one lost in 1856, now the Orthodox cathedral of Rhodes, presiding over Mandraki with frescoes by Fotis Kontoglou.

The Church of the Annunciation, known as Evangelismos, stands at the northern end of Mandraki, among the Italian-era administrative buildings around Eleftherias (Freedom) Square. It was built in the 1920s during the Italian occupation as the Catholic church of San Giovanni dei Cavalieri, to a design by the Italian architect Florestano Di Fausto. The building is a Gothic-style replica of the medieval Church of St John of the Knights, which stood beside the Palace of the Grand Master until it was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in 1856.

The church served the Italian Catholic community until 1948, when the Dodecanese were united with Greece; it then became a Greek Orthodox church and the cathedral of Rhodes. Its interior frescoes were painted by the renowned Greek painter Fotis Kontoglou. The tall fountain in the square in front is a half-size replica of the medieval Fontana Grande of Viterbo in Italy, built in 1920. The church celebrates its feast each year on 25 March.

Did you know? Though it looks medieval, the church was built in the 1920s during the Italian occupation as a Gothic-style replica of the Church of St John of the Knights, destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in 1856.
