About Acropolis of Lindos

A cliff-top sanctuary of Athena 116 metres above a whitewashed, car-free village, roughly 50 kilometres south of Rhodes Town: a temple, a Hellenistic colonnade and a knights' castle.

The Acropolis of Lindos crowns a sheer rock about 116 metres high, roughly 50 kilometres south of Rhodes Town and directly above the whitewashed, car-free village of Lindos. It was the sanctuary of Athena Lindia, whose cult on the rock goes back to at least the ninth century BC. The Doric temple visible today was rebuilt in the late fourth century BC, after an earlier temple burned in 342 BC, and is a small building of roughly 22 by 8 metres.

A monumental Hellenistic stoa of around 200 BC, a colonnade of some 42 columns, fronts the grand staircase up to the temple. At the foot of the stairway, a relief of a Rhodian warship's stern is carved into the living rock, serving as the base for a bronze statue of the naval commander Hagesandros. The summit was later fortified with a Byzantine chapel and the medieval castle of the Knights of St John, so three ages of building share the rock.

Did you know? At the foot of the stairs, a Rhodian warship's stern is carved into the rock by the sculptor Pythokritos, credited with the Louvre's Winged Victory of Samothrace; the vessel is a trihemiolia, not a trireme.
