About Liberty Statue
A 14-metre bronze woman lifting a palm frond over Budapest from the Citadella's bastion, raised in 1947 as a Soviet memorial, later rededicated to Hungary's freedom.
The Liberty Statue is a bronze female figure about 14 metres tall holding a palm frond aloft, standing on the south-eastern bastion of the Citadella atop Gellért Hill. With its pedestal the monument rises roughly 40 metres and is visible across much of the city. It was sculpted by Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl and erected in 1947. Two smaller allegorical bronzes flank the pedestal: one holding a torch for progress, the other fighting a serpent as the struggle against evil.
Originally a Soviet war memorial marking the Red Army's 1944–45 liberation of Budapest from Nazi German occupation, it once included a Red Army soldier figure and Soviet inscriptions. After the 1989 change of system these were removed and the soldier relocated to Memento Park, and the inscription was rededicated to all who gave their lives for the independence, freedom and prosperity of Hungary. The story that it was first designed for Regent Horthy's son István is unfounded.
