About Buda Castle Funicular (Budavári Sikló)
A tiny Victorian railway of stepped wooden carriages that hauls you up Castle Hill from the Chain Bridge in ninety seconds, running, on and off, since 1870.
The Buda Castle Funicular, or Budavári Sikló, is a short funicular railway climbing the steep eastern face of Castle Hill. It runs from Clark Ádám Square, at the Buda end of the Széchenyi Chain Bridge, up to the palace, rising about fifty metres over some ninety-five metres of track. It opened on 2 March 1870, promoted and financed by Ödön Széchenyi, and was originally steam-powered before later electrification.
Widely described as one of the oldest funiculars in the world, commonly cited as the second in Europe, after Lyon's 1862 line, it runs two counter-balanced cars, named Margit and Gellért, with stepped, terraced passenger compartments. Destroyed during the 1944–45 Siege of Budapest, it lay derelict for decades before being rebuilt and reopened on 4 June 1986. It forms part of the UNESCO-listed Buda Castle Quarter and is a protected historic monument.
Did you know? It is often called the oldest funicular in the world, but that is a stretch, it is usually reckoned only the second built in Europe, after Lyon's line of 1862. Still, opening in 1870 makes it genuinely ancient.
