About Castle District (Várnegyed)
A hushed, cobbled quarter of pastel townhouses and hidden Gothic doorways crowning Castle Hill, a walled medieval town that has kept its shape for seven centuries above the Danube.
The Castle District, or Várnegyed, is the cobbled medieval quarter crowning the roughly one-kilometre limestone plateau of Castle Hill, high above the Danube. Largely pedestrianised, it is lined with restored Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance townhouses. The hill was settled from the mid-thirteenth century, after the Mongol invasion of 1241–42, when King Béla IV moved the population up onto the fortified ridge.
Its landmarks include Buda Castle at the southern end, Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion, Holy Trinity Square with its Baroque plague column of 1710–1713, the Vienna Gate, the Mary Magdalene Tower and Sándor Palace, the presidential residence. Streets such as Táncsics Mihály, Fortuna and Úri preserve medieval house façades, many with Gothic sedilia in their gateways. The whole quarter forms part of Budapest's UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1987.
