About Hospital in the Rock
Beneath Buda Castle Hill, a secret hospital in the caves treated the wounded through the 1944 siege and the 1956 revolution, then became a hidden Cold War nuclear bunker.
The Hospital in the Rock (Sziklakórház) is an emergency hospital and air-raid shelter built in the 1930s and 1940s into the natural cave and cellar system beneath Buda Castle Hill, at Lovas út 4. During the siege of Budapest in the winter of 1944 to 1945 it treated large numbers of wounded soldiers and civilians, far beyond its planned capacity, and it served as an emergency hospital again during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
During the Cold War the site was secretly extended and equipped as a nuclear and chemical-attack bunker, a conversion generally dated to 1958 to 1962, with gas-filtered ventilation and an independent water supply. Declassified and opened to the public in 2007 as the Sziklakórház Atombunker Múzeum (Hospital in the Rock Nuclear Bunker Museum), its interior is furnished with period medical equipment and about 200 wax figures of staff and patients. Photography inside is not permitted.
