About Rudas Baths
A working Ottoman Turkish bath from the sixteenth century, where coloured light falls through a stone dome onto an octagonal pool fed by hot springs beneath Gellért Hill.
Rudas Baths is an Ottoman-era Turkish bath at the northern foot of Gellért Hill, beside the Buda end of Elisabeth Bridge. Its heart is an octagonal thermal pool set beneath a hemispherical dome about ten metres across, carried on eight pillars and pierced with small coloured-glass openings that cast tinted light onto the water. The domed bath dates to the Ottoman occupation of the sixteenth century and was built up during the governorship of the Buda pasha Sokollu Mustafa, in office from 1566 to 1578; the often-cited 1550s predates him.
It remains an operating bath fed by hot springs, with several thermal pools, a steam room and a nineteenth-century swimming-pool wing. A modern rooftop hot tub with a Danube view was added in a 2000s renovation and reopened in 2006. Historically the Turkish bath was men-only on most days, and it still runs single-sex days alongside mixed weekend and night sessions.
