About Gellért Hill
A steep dolomite hill rising 235 metres over the Danube, crowned by a fortress and a soaring statue, offering what many call the finest panorama in all of Budapest.
Gellért Hill is a dolomite outcrop on the Buda bank of the Danube, rising roughly 235 metres above sea level and falling in steep rock faces toward the river. It takes its name from Bishop Gerard of Csanád, an Italian-born Benedictine missionary who was martyred in 1046 during a pagan uprising; tradition holds that he was rolled from the hill in a barrel, though this remains legend rather than documented history.
The summit is crowned by the Citadella fortress and the Liberty Statue, while the Cave Church is set into the hillside and the Gellért and Rudas thermal baths lie at its foot. One of Budapest's most celebrated viewpoints, it takes in the river, its bridges, the Pest skyline and Buda Castle. Its landscaped slopes hold parks and a Philosophers' Garden, and the whole hill falls within the city's 1987 UNESCO World Heritage inscription.
