Ropes of scarlet paprika hang under a cathedral-sized roof of iron and Zsolnay tiles: Budapest's grandest market has fed the city since 1897, where Váci utca meets the river.
The Great Market Hall, popularly called the Central Market Hall in English, is Budapest's largest and oldest surviving indoor market, opened on 15 February 1897. It was designed by the architect Samu Pecz in a Neo-Gothic style built around an exposed iron structural frame and a brick façade, and roofed with colourful glazed Zsolnay tiles from Pécs. It stands at Fővám tér, at the Pest end of the Liberty Bridge and the southern end of Váci utca.
The hall has three levels: a ground floor of produce, meat and food stalls, an upper gallery of eateries and souvenir stands, and a basement with fish, pickles and a supermarket. Heavily damaged in the Second World War and neglected under socialism, it was thoroughly restored and reopened in 1994. One of five municipal market halls opened in Budapest in 1897, it is now both a working market and a major tourist attraction.
