About Váci Street (Váci utca)
No cars, just footsteps and shop windows: Pest's great walking street runs from an old café square all the way to the smell of paprika at the market hall.
Váci utca is the best-known pedestrian shopping street in Pest, running through District V, the Inner City, roughly parallel to the Danube. It extends about 1.2 kilometres from Vörösmarty tér in the north toward Fővám tér and the Great Market Hall in the south, with the busy Kossuth Lajos utca crossing near Ferenciek tere dividing it into a more touristy northern half and a quieter southern one. The name derives from the medieval Váci kapu (Vác Gate), as the road once led toward the town of Vác.
Although often described as Budapest's oldest street, its character as a pedestrian shopping promenade is largely a nineteenth- and twentieth-century development; the northern section was pedestrianised in the 1960s and 1970s. Landmarks along it include Thonet House at 11/a, an early Art Nouveau work by Ödön Lechner and Gyula Pártos clad in Zsolnay pyrogranite, and the ornate Philanthia florist at number 9.
