About Gellért Thermal Baths
A dazzling Art Nouveau thermal palace of 1918 at the foot of Gellért Hill, its columned indoor pool wrapped in Zsolnay tiles, stained glass and mosaics.
The Gellért Thermal Baths are Art Nouveau, or Hungarian Secession, thermal baths built into the Hotel Gellért complex at the foot of Gellért Hill. Constructed between 1912 and 1918 and opened in 1918, they were designed by the architects Ármin Hegedűs, Artúr Sebestyén and Izidor Sterk. The baths are celebrated for their Zsolnay porcelain tiles made in Pécs, stained-glass windows, mosaics and sculpture, and for a columned, glass-roofed indoor thermal swimming hall.
An outdoor pool with an artificial wave machine was added in 1927, and the complex holds several indoor thermal pools of differing temperatures. The mineral-rich springs here were used long before the present building: healing baths existed on this spot in the Middle Ages and again under Ottoman rule. Though marketing sometimes calls it the oldest bath, Gellért is an early-twentieth-century building; Budapest's genuinely old Turkish baths are Rudas, Király and Veli Bej.
