About Cave Church
A church built inside a natural cave in Gellért Hill, home to Hungary's own Pauline order, raided and sealed shut under communism, and reopened only after 1989.
The Cave Church is built inside a natural cave, Saint Ivan's Cave, in the Danube-facing flank of Gellért Hill. It was established in 1926 by the Pauline order, the Order of Saint Paul the First Hermit and the only monastic order of Hungarian origin, and its interior was modelled on the grotto of Lourdes. A neo-Gothic Pauline monastery with a distinctive turret stands beside the cave entrance on the hillside.
On Easter Monday 1951 the communist State Protection Authority raided the church and dissolved the community, charging the monks with treason amid a wider suppression of the Catholic Church. The Pauline superior Ferenc Vezér was executed in 1951, and other monks received prison terms of roughly five to ten years. The cave was walled up with a thick concrete barrier; sources differ on whether this occurred in 1951 or the early 1960s. It reopened after 1989, and in 1992 the wall was demolished and the church reconsecrated.
