About Citadella
A long, low Habsburg fortress crowning Gellért Hill, raised in the 1850s to keep watch over a rebellious city, never a medieval castle, despite its ancient-looking walls.
The Citadella is a fortress on the summit of Gellért Hill, built by the Habsburg military around 1850 to 1854 after the suppression of the 1848–49 Hungarian Revolution. Roughly 220 metres long and 60 metres wide, with walls up to four metres thick, it was armed to command both Buda and Pest as a symbol of Austrian control over a rebellious city. Despite its castle-like silhouette, it is a nineteenth-century work, not a medieval or Ottoman one.
Its guns were designed to intimidate rather than fight, and it never saw genuine battle against the population in the 1800s, though Soviet tanks positioned on the hill fired on the city during the 1956 Uprising. After the 1867 Compromise it lost its military role, and around 1897–1900 the army relinquished it and parts of the walls were breached. Later a lookout and tourist site, it has recently undergone a major state renovation, reopening in phases as a national memorial.
