About Buda Castle (Budavári Palota)
One of Europe's most rebuilt palaces, this vast royal complex crowning Castle Hill has been besieged, burned, and raised again and again, and now guards Hungary's greatest art.
Buda Castle, the historic royal palace of the Hungarian kings, occupies the southern end of Castle Hill above the Danube. The first fortified residence here was begun in the thirteenth century under King Béla IV, but the great Gothic palace grew chiefly under Louis I and Sigismund of Luxembourg, and became a Renaissance cultural centre under Matthias Corvinus, whose Bibliotheca Corviniana ranked among the finest libraries of its age.
Ruined during the Ottoman occupation and the 1686 reconquest, the palace was rebuilt in Baroque by the Habsburgs and vastly enlarged around 1890–1905 by Miklós Ybl and Alajos Hauszmann. Gutted in the 1944–45 Siege of Budapest, it was reconstructed with a simplified exterior under the communist regime. Today it houses the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum and part of the National Széchényi Library, within the UNESCO-listed Buda Castle Quarter.
Did you know? King Matthias Corvinus filled the palace with the Bibliotheca Corviniana, one of Renaissance Europe's greatest libraries. After the Ottomans took Buda its manuscripts were scattered worldwide, and surviving volumes are still tracked down today.
