Fisherman's Bastion is a neo-Romanesque viewing terrace on Castle Hill, built between 1895 and 1902 to designs by Frigyes Schulek, who also restored the adjoining Matthias Church. Despite its battlements, it was never a fortification: it was raised purely as a decorative promenade and lookout, replacing a section of the hill's old defensive walls. Its seven tent-roofed turrets symbolise the seven Magyar tribes whose chieftains led the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin around 895–896.
The name is traditionally linked to a medieval fishermen's guild said to have defended this stretch of wall, or to a riverside fish market, though the connection is not firmly documented. Between the terrace and the church stands Alajos Stróbl's bronze equestrian statue of King Stephen I, unveiled in 1906. The terrace commands a sweeping panorama across the Danube toward Pest, the Parliament, Margaret Island and the Chain Bridge.
