About Liberty Bridge

Liberty Bridge (Szabadság híd) is the shortest of the central Danube bridges in Budapest, about 333.6 metres long and 20.1 metres wide, connecting Fővám tér and the Central Market Hall on the Pest bank with Gellért tér and the Gellért Baths on the Buda bank. Designed by the engineer János Feketeházy as a steel cantilever-truss bridge in an Art Nouveau style and painted a distinctive green, it opened in 1896 as part of Hungary's Millennium celebrations. It was originally named Ferenc József híd, the Franz Joseph Bridge, after the reigning emperor, and was renamed after the Second World War. Bronze statues of the turul, a mythical bird of ancient Hungarian legend, crown its four tall masts. Heavily damaged in 1945, it was the first Budapest bridge to be rebuilt after the war, reopening on 20 August 1946 under its new name.
