About Hungarian National Museum
Hungary's grand temple to its own past, and the staircase where legend says a poet lit the 1848 revolution. Just don't come expecting the Holy Crown; that's in Parliament.
The Hungarian National Museum is the national museum of Hungarian history, art and archaeology. It was founded in 1802 around the collection donated by Count Ferenc Széchényi, and its holdings run from prehistory and the Roman period through the Hungarian Middle Ages to the twentieth century, including the coronation mantle of the Hungarian kings. The Holy Crown of Hungary, often assumed to be here, is now kept in the Parliament.
The Neoclassical building on Múzeum körút in District VIII was purpose-built between 1837 and 1847 by the architect Mihály Pollack, with a large columned portico and sculpted tympanum, and ranks as a defining work of Hungarian Neoclassicism; the building and its garden are a protected monument. By tradition the poet Sándor Petőfi recited his 'National Song' on the front steps at the start of the 15 March 1848 revolution, a durable popular story historians doubt, and the forecourt still hosts commemorations each 15 March.
Did you know? A common Budapest mix-up: the Holy Crown of Hungary is not in the National Museum, it is kept in the Parliament building. The kings' coronation mantle, however, does stay here.
