About Jewish Quarter (Erzsébetváros)
Budapest's historic Jewish quarter carries two histories at once: the sealed 1944 ghetto and, inside the same crumbling courtyards, the ruin bars that made District Seven the city's nightlife.
Erzsébetváros, Budapest's District VII on the Pest side, contains the city's historic Jewish quarter, with Klauzál Square at its traditional heart. In late November 1944 the Arrow Cross sealed the area as the Budapest ghetto, confining roughly 70,000 people in about 0.3 square kilometres; Soviet forces liberated it on 17 to 18 January 1945. During that winter the Arrow Cross starved and murdered residents, and thousands of Budapest Jews were shot into the nearby Danube.
The quarter holds three major synagogues, the Neolog Dohány Street, the status quo ante Rumbach Street, and the Orthodox Kazinczy Street. Since the 2000s the same district has become Budapest's ruin-bar district, with nightlife built inside derelict pre-war buildings; Szimpla Kert, the best-known ruin bar, began in 2002 and moved to Kazinczy utca 14 in 2004. Today memorials, kosher institutions and street art sit alongside the bars.
