Vajdahunyad Castle (Vajdahunyad vára) stands on an island in the City Park boating lake, reached by a short bridge. Despite its medieval appearance, it is not a genuine castle: it was designed by the architect Ignác Alpár and built for the 1896 Millennial Exhibition, which marked a thousand years since the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin. Alpár conceived it as an eclectic collage of landmark buildings from across the historic Kingdom of Hungary, blending Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Its Gothic silhouette copies the Hunyad (Corvin) Castle in Transylvania, while other elements quote buildings such as the Ják abbey church. First erected in cardboard and wood as a temporary pavilion, it proved so popular that it was rebuilt in stone and brick between 1904 and 1908. Today it houses the Museum of Hungarian Agriculture, and the hooded Anonymus statue by Miklós Ligeti (1903) sits in its courtyard.
