Heroes' Square (Hősök tere) is Budapest's grandest ceremonial space, laid out at the head of Andrássy Avenue and dominated by the Millennium Monument. Construction of the monument began in 1896 for the thousand-year anniversary of the Magyar conquest, traditionally dated to 895. Its thirty-six-metre central column is topped by the Archangel Gabriel, holding the Hungarian Holy Crown and a two-barred apostolic cross; the Gabriel figure won a Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris World's Fair. Seven equestrian statues of the Magyar chieftains, led by Árpád, stand at the column's base, while the flanking colonnades hold statues of Hungarian kings and statesmen, replacing earlier Habsburg figures removed after the Second World War. The stone slab in front is the Heroes' Memorial Stone, a cenotaph, not a tomb. The square is framed by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle, and forms part of Budapest's UNESCO World Heritage listing.
Did you know? The plain stone slab in front of the column is often called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but no one is buried there, it is a cenotaph, and only an artesian well lies beneath it.
