About Hungarian State Opera House (Magyar Állami Operaház)

Two bronze composers flank the door and a painted Olympus fills the ceiling: Miklós Ybl's 1884 opera house is the jewel of Andrássy Avenue, reopened after years dark.

The Hungarian State Opera House stands at Andrássy út 22 in a Neo-Renaissance style, designed by the architect Miklós Ybl and built between 1875 and 1884. It was ceremonially opened on 27 September 1884, its construction funded largely by the city of Budapest and Emperor Franz Joseph I. The auditorium ceiling carries a large fresco of the Greek gods on Olympus by Károly Lotz, with further decorative painting by Bertalan Székely and Mór Than.

The main façade is ornamented with statues of composers, including Ferenc Erkel, the opera's first music director, and Franz Liszt flanking the entrance, along with sixteen composer figures ranged across the upper level. Home to the Hungarian State Opera company, the building closed in 2017 for a major restoration and reopened in March 2022. It remains one of Budapest's foremost cultural landmarks and a highlight of the Andrássy Avenue World Heritage route.

Did you know? Guides love to say Franz Joseph demanded the house be no bigger than Vienna's opera. No document proves it, but Budapest is smaller, and locals will happily tell you it sounds better.
