A mile-and-a-half line of grand mansions runs from downtown to Heroes' Square, and under your feet rattles the oldest electric underground on the European continent.
Andrássy Avenue is a grand, tree-lined boulevard running about 2.3 kilometres from the downtown near Erzsébet tér out to Heroes' Square and the City Park. It was built mainly between 1872 and 1876 and opened in 1876, taking the name of the statesman Count Gyula Andrássy in 1885. In 2002 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, extending Budapest's existing listing.
The boulevard is lined with Neo-Renaissance palaces, villas and mansions from the late nineteenth century, and its landmarks include the Hungarian State Opera House, the Drechsler Palace, the House of Terror museum at number 60, and the Ferenc Liszt Academy near the Oktogon junction. Beneath it runs the M1 Millennium Underground, opened in 1896 and best described as the oldest electrified underground railway on the European continent. The avenue terminates at Heroes' Square with its Millennium Monument, flanked by the Museum of Fine Arts and the Kunsthalle.
