About Széchenyi Chain Bridge
The first permanent bridge ever thrown across the Danube, guarded by four stone lions, and no, the sculptor did not drown himself over their supposedly missing tongues.
The Széchenyi Chain Bridge (Széchenyi Lánchíd) was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary, opening on 20 November 1849 and linking the once-separate towns of Buda and Pest. It was championed by the reformer Count István Széchenyi, designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark, and built on site by the Scottish engineer Adam Clark, who was not related to the designer. Four stone lions carved by the sculptor János Marschalkó have guarded the bridgeheads since 1852. The suspension bridge runs about 375 metres, with a central span of roughly 202 metres that ranked among the largest in the world when built. Retreating German troops destroyed it on 18 January 1945 during the Siege of Budapest; it was rebuilt and reopened on 20 November 1949, exactly a century after the original. A full renovation followed between 2021 and 2023.
Did you know? A beloved local legend says the lions have no tongues and that the humiliated sculptor drowned himself. Both halves are false: the lions do have tongues, merely hidden from view at street level.
