A forest of neo-Gothic spires rising straight out of the Danube, Hungary's vast riverfront parliament was built to be seen from the water, and it still stops you cold.
The Hungarian Parliament Building (Országház) is the seat of the National Assembly and the largest building in Hungary, stretching 268 metres along the Pest bank of the Danube in the Lipótváros district. Designed by the architect Imre Steindl in the Gothic Revival style, it was built between 1885 and 1904, though it was ceremonially inaugurated in 1896 for the Hungarian millennium. The symmetrical façade conceals 691 rooms, and the central dome rises 96 metres, a figure that echoes both 1896 and 896, the traditional date of the Magyar conquest, and that matches the height of St Stephen's Basilica. It is one of the largest parliament buildings in the world, though not the largest. Since 2000 the sixteen-sided domed hall has displayed the Holy Crown of Hungary and the coronation regalia. Steindl went nearly blind during construction and died in 1902, before its completion.
