About City Park (Városliget)
Budapest's sprawling green heart, one of the world's earliest public parks, hiding a fairy-tale castle, a steaming thermal bath, a zoo, and a boating lake that freezes into a skating rink.
City Park (Városliget) is one of the world's earliest public parks, its first planned walkways and trees laid out around 1751 and the land opened for public use in the early nineteenth century. Covering roughly 1.2 square kilometres, about 1,400 by 970 metres, it borders Heroes' Square on its southwest side, where its main entrance stands. The park contains many of Budapest's best-known attractions: Vajdahunyad Castle on its boating lake, the Széchenyi Thermal Bath, and the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, alongside the Capital Circus, the Museum of Ethnography, the House of Music Hungary, the City Park Ice Rink, and the historic Gundel restaurant. In winter the boating lake freezes into one of Europe's largest outdoor ice rinks. During the 2010s and 2020s, the Liget Budapest Project brought a major redevelopment, adding new museum buildings among the mature trees.
Did you know? Come winter, the boating lake in front of Vajdahunyad Castle freezes solid and reopens as the City Park Ice Rink, counted among the largest open-air skating rinks anywhere in Europe.
