The Bratislava route at a glance
Day 1
Day 1 covers 7 stops over about 2.5 km as the crow flies, from Bratislava Castle to The Old Town Statues. ≈ 2.5 km between stops, straight line
Morning
- Bratislava Castle: The great white castle with four corner towers that crowns a hill above the Danube, the city's emblem for centuries, burned to a ruin in 1811 and rebuilt, now a museum with sweeping views. 0.5 km to the next stop
- UFO Bridge (SNP Bridge): The bold 1972 cable-stayed bridge over the Danube whose single leaning pylon is topped by a flying-saucer restaurant and viewing deck, built at the cost of much of the old town below the castle. 0.4 km to the next stop
- St Martin's Cathedral: The Gothic cathedral below the castle where eleven Hungarian kings and queens were crowned, its 85-metre tower topped not by a cross but by a gilded replica of the Crown of St Stephen. 0.3 km to the next stop
- Hviezdoslav Square: The long, leafy promenade of the Old Town, lined with cafes, grand hotels and the opera house, named for the national poet Hviezdoslav, whose statue is the city's favourite meeting point. 0.2 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Slovak National Theatre: The ornate Neo-Renaissance opera house of 1886 that closes Hviezdoslav Square, with the graceful Ganymede Fountain before it, long the home of Slovakia's national opera, ballet and drama. 0.5 km to the next stop
- The Blue Church: A fairy-tale Art Nouveau church washed entirely in pale blue, with blue-glazed tiles and a round tower, built in the early 1900s by Ödön Lechner and one of the most photographed sights in the city. 0.6 km to the next stop
- The Old Town Statues: The quirky bronze characters scattered through the Old Town, led by Čumil the grinning sewer worker peeking from a manhole, joined by the dapper Schöne Náci, a Napoleonic soldier and a lurking paparazzo.
Day 2
Day 2 covers 6 stops over about 11 km as the crow flies, from Main Square to Devín Castle. ≈ 11 km between stops, straight line
Morning
- Main Square: The pretty heart of the Old Town, ringed by pastel townhouses and palaces around the Renaissance Roland Fountain of 1572 and the Old Town Hall, home to the oldest museum in the city. 0.1 km to the next stop
- Primate's Palace: A refined pink Neoclassical palace of 1781 whose Hall of Mirrors saw the Peace of Pressburg signed after Austerlitz, and whose rare English tapestries lay hidden in a wall for over a century. 0.2 km to the next stop
- Michael's Gate: The last surviving medieval town gate, a tall Baroque tower topped by a green onion dome and a gilded statue of St Michael slaying the dragon, with a weapons museum and a rooftop view. 0.5 km to the next stop
Afternoon
- Grassalkovich Palace: The elegant Rococo summer palace of 1760, now the residence of the Slovak president, with a ceremonial guard out front and a French garden, open to all, where a statue of Maria Theresa stands. 0.8 km to the next stop
- Slavín Memorial: A solemn hilltop war memorial and cemetery to the Soviet soldiers who died liberating Bratislava in 1945, its tall obelisk crowned by a bronze soldier, above one of the finest views of the city. 9.3 km to the next stop
- Devín Castle: The dramatic ruined castle on a crag where the Morava meets the Danube, an ancient Great Moravian stronghold blown up by Napoleon's troops, now a cherished symbol of Slovak national history.
Distances are straight-line between stops; streets add a little.
