About Grassalkovich Palace

The elegant Rococo summer palace of 1760, now the residence of the Slovak president, with a ceremonial guard out front and a French garden, open to all, where a statue of Maria Theresa stands.

Grassalkovich Palace (Grasalkovičov palác) is a graceful Rococo summer palace, finished in 1760 for Count Antal Grassalkovich, a close friend of Empress Maria Theresa, and today the residence of the President of Slovakia. A guard stands at its gate, and a ceremonial changing of the guard takes place out front. In its heyday the palace was a centre of musical life, and by tradition Haydn is said to have performed here.

Behind the palace lies the Grassalkovich Garden, once the count's private grounds and now a free public park of lawns, flower beds and clipped hedges, with a statue of the Bratislava-born composer Johann Nepomuk Hummel, an equestrian statue of Maria Theresa, and a modern fountain. The palace interior is open to the public only about one day a year.
