About UFO Bridge (SNP Bridge)
The bold 1972 cable-stayed bridge over the Danube whose single leaning pylon is topped by a flying-saucer restaurant and viewing deck, built at the cost of much of the old town below the castle.
The SNP Bridge (Most SNP), the Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising, opened in 1972 and is Bratislava's most striking modern landmark: an asymmetric cable-stayed bridge over the Danube with a single leaning pylon, topped by a flying-saucer-shaped structure that holds a restaurant and observation deck, nicknamed the UFO. A lift carries visitors up for sweeping views over the city, the castle and the river.
The bridge came at a heavy cost to the old city. To build its approach road, a large part of the Old Town below the castle was demolished in the late 1960s, including almost all of the historic Jewish quarter and its grand Neolog Synagogue. A Holocaust memorial now stands on the synagogue's site, and the preserved grave of the revered rabbi Chatam Sofer survives in a memorial chamber nearby.
