About The Blue Church
A fairy-tale Art Nouveau church washed entirely in pale blue, with blue-glazed tiles and a round tower, built in the early 1900s by Ödön Lechner and one of the most photographed sights in the city.
The Church of St Elizabeth, universally known as the Blue Church (Modrý kostol), is a jewel of Art Nouveau in the eastern Old Town, built between 1909 and 1913 by the Hungarian architect Ödön Lechner, a master of the Secession style. It is dedicated to St Elizabeth of Hungary, who was born in the castle here, and was conceived as a kind of symbolic shrine to her.
The church is famous for being washed almost entirely in a soft, pale blue, outside and in, with a roof of blue-glazed ceramic tiles, a round cylindrical tower nearly 37 metres high, and a mosaic of St Elizabeth above the door. Rounded, flowing and gently playful, it looks like something from a fairy tale, and it is one of the most photographed buildings in all of Bratislava.
