About Main Square

The pretty heart of the Old Town, ringed by pastel townhouses and palaces around the Renaissance Roland Fountain of 1572 and the Old Town Hall, home to the oldest museum in the city.

Hlavné námestie, the Main Square, is the lovely heart of Bratislava's Old Town, a space of pastel townhouses and palaces that has hosted markets, festivals, coronation processions and, in darker times, public executions. At its centre plays the Roland (Maximilian) Fountain, ordered by King Maximilian II in 1572 to give the town its first public water supply, topped by a knight in armour.

On the northeast side stands the Old Town Hall, the oldest city hall in Slovakia, grown in the fifteenth century from several houses around a Gothic tower; it has held the Bratislava City Museum, the city's oldest, since 1868. A cannonball from Napoleon's 1809 bombardment is lodged in its tower, and a bronze Napoleonic soldier leans on a bench nearby.

Did you know? The Main Square (Hlavné námestie) is the historic heart of the Old Town, where markets, festivals, coronation processions and, in harsher ages, public executions once took place.
