About Primate's Palace
A refined pink Neoclassical palace of 1781 whose Hall of Mirrors saw the Peace of Pressburg signed after Austerlitz, and whose rare English tapestries lay hidden in a wall for over a century.
The Primate's Palace (Primaciálny palác) is an elegant pink Neoclassical palace in the Old Town, built from 1778 to 1781 for the Archbishop of Esztergom, the Primate of Hungary. Its grandest room, the Hall of Mirrors, is where, on 26 December 1805, the Peace of Pressburg was signed between Napoleonic France and Austria after the Battle of Austerlitz.
The palace holds a remarkable treasure: a set of six English tapestries, woven at Mortlake near London and telling the romantic legend of Hero and Leander, which lay forgotten behind a wall until they were rediscovered during repairs in 1903. Today the palace is the seat of the city's mayor and an art gallery, and visitors can admire the tapestries and the Hall of Mirrors.
