About Slovak National Theatre

The ornate Neo-Renaissance opera house of 1886 that closes Hviezdoslav Square, with the graceful Ganymede Fountain before it, long the home of Slovakia's national opera, ballet and drama.

The historic building of the Slovak National Theatre, a richly ornamented Neo-Renaissance opera house, closes the eastern end of Hviezdoslav Square. It was built in 1885 to 1886 by the celebrated Viennese theatre architects Fellner & Helmer and opened in 1886. Before it plays the elegant Ganymede Fountain, the work of the sculptor Viktor Tilgner, one of the most photographed spots in the city.

The Slovak National Theatre is the country's oldest professional theatre, home to national opera, ballet and drama companies whose story begins in 1920. The historic house is one of Bratislava's most beloved landmarks, though performances have in recent years moved to a large new theatre building on the Danube; the old opera house can be admired from the square and its fountain.
