About Hviezdoslav Square
The long, leafy promenade of the Old Town, lined with cafes, grand hotels and the opera house, named for the national poet Hviezdoslav, whose statue is the city's favourite meeting point.
Hviezdoslavovo námestie, Hviezdoslav Square, is the elegant tree-lined promenade at the heart of the Old Town, running between the Danube embankment and the historic opera house. It is named after Pavol Országh Hviezdoslav (1849-1921), regarded as the national poet of Slovakia, whose statue stands on the square and is a favourite meeting point.
Laid out where the medieval walls and moat once stood, the square is lined with cafes, restaurants, embassies and grand hotels such as the Carlton, and closed at its eastern end by the Slovak National Theatre and the Ganymede Fountain. A broad, green, pedestrian space with fountains and a stage for events, it is one of the city's loveliest places for a stroll.
