About Slavín Memorial
A solemn hilltop war memorial and cemetery to the Soviet soldiers who died liberating Bratislava in 1945, its tall obelisk crowned by a bronze soldier, above one of the finest views of the city.
Slavín is a war memorial and military cemetery on a hill above the city, raised to the Soviet soldiers who died in the fighting for Bratislava in April 1945 at the end of the Second World War. Built between 1957 and 1960 and opened on the fifteenth anniversary of the city's liberation, it is the resting place of 6,845 soldiers, in mass graves and individual graves.
From a colonnaded base rises a tall obelisk, about forty metres high, crowned by a bronze figure of a soldier holding a flag; reliefs and a cemetery of graves surround it. It stands in a quiet, leafy district, and the terrace before it offers one of the widest and finest views over the Old Town, the castle and the Danube. As a cemetery, it is a place to visit quietly and with respect.
