About Michael's Gate
The last surviving medieval town gate, a tall Baroque tower topped by a green onion dome and a gilded statue of St Michael slaying the dragon, with a weapons museum and a rooftop view.
Michael's Gate (Michalská brána) is the only one of the four medieval city gates of Bratislava still standing, and one of the oldest buildings in the city, with origins around 1300. Through it the kings of Hungary made their last stop on the way to be crowned. Razed and rebuilt over the centuries, it took its present Baroque form in 1753 to 1758, a tall tower topped by a copper onion dome and a gilded statue of St Michael slaying the dragon.
The tower rises about 51 metres and was the heart of a defensive system of walls, bastions, a barbican and a moat, crossed by the city's oldest bridge of 1727. Inside, the Bratislava City Museum displays the city's old weapons and fortifications, and a climb to the top is rewarded with fine views over the Old Town rooftops to the castle. A zero-kilometre marker in the pavement below measures distances to world capitals.
