About Andorra la Vella & Andorra

Welcome to Andorra, a small country high in the eastern Pyrenees, between France and Spain. Its capital, Andorra la Vella, lies at about a thousand metres, where two mountain rivers meet, and is often called the highest capital city in Europe. Around it, steep green valleys climb to peaks of almost three thousand metres.

Andorra is one of the oldest and most unusual countries in Europe. Since an agreement of 1278 it has been shared by two lords, and today its heads of state are still two co-princes: the Bishop of Urgell, in Catalonia, and the President of France. Its parliament dates back to 1419, and in 1993 it adopted a democratic constitution. Its official language is Catalan.

For centuries Andorra was a poor land of shepherds, farmers and iron makers, isolated in its mountain valleys. It stayed neutral in the Second World War, when its mountain paths were used for smuggling. After the war, new roads brought visitors, and the country grew rich on tourism, skiing and low-tax shopping, which now draw millions of people every year.

We will visit the Casa de la Vall, the old parliament, the old quarter and the church of Sant Esteve, the shopping street of Avinguda Meritxell and the Caldea spa, and learn about the co-princes. Then we will go out into the valleys: to the Romanesque churches of Santa Coloma and Sant Joan de Caselles, the medieval Margineda bridge, the sanctuary of Meritxell, the village of Ordino, the Roc del Quer viewpoint, the ski slopes of Grandvalira and the wild Madriu valley.

Andorra has no airport or railway, so most visitors arrive by bus or car from Spain or France. Buses link the main villages. In the mountains, the weather changes fast, so dress for it. Welcome to Andorra.
