About The Co-Principality

Andorra's unique co-principality: two joint heads of state, the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France, a system that grew from the agreements of 1278, told on the square of the Casa de la Vall.

In 1278 the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix agreed to share rule over the valleys. The count's rights passed to the kings of France, and today the French President and the Bishop of Urgell are Andorra's co-princes.

Since the Constitution of 1993, Andorra has been a parliamentary democracy in which the co-princes have limited powers. Monuments to the agreements of 1278 and to the Constitution stand by the Casa de la Vall; the square is open at all times.

Did you know? Andorra has two heads of state, the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France, a system that grew from an agreement signed on 8 September 1278.
