About Resurrection Cathedral
Tirana's great Orthodox cathedral, opened in 2012, one of the largest in the Balkans, with a golden dome and a soaring white bell tower, a symbol of religious revival after the communist ban.
The Orthodox Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in central Tirana was opened in 2012 and consecrated in 2014, marking the revival of the Albanian Orthodox Church after the communist era. One of the largest Orthodox churches in the Balkans, it has a dome about 32 metres high and a separate bell tower of 46 metres with 16 bells.
The complex includes chapels, a cultural centre, a library and a small museum. Archbishop Anastasios, who rebuilt the church after 1992, is buried in its grounds. Under communism Albania banned all religion from 1967; today Muslims, Orthodox and Catholics live side by side.
Did you know? The Resurrection Cathedral opened in 2012, on the twentieth anniversary of the revival of the Albanian Orthodox Church, and was consecrated in 2014.
