About Pyramid of Tirana

A giant pyramid opened in 1988 as a museum to the dictator Enver Hoxha, later left to decay and covered in graffiti, and reborn in 2023 as a youth technology centre with a rooftop view.

The Pyramid of Tirana opened in 1988 as the Enver Hoxha Museum, three years after the dictator's death, designed by a team of architects including his daughter Pranvera Hoxha. After 1991 it became a conference centre, served as a NATO and aid base during the 1999 Kosovo war, housed a television station, and gradually decayed, its smooth slopes becoming a slide for local teenagers.

In 2010 there were plans to demolish it, but a public campaign saved it. Renovated by the Dutch architects MVRDV, it reopened in 2023 as TUMO Tirana, a free technology and creative centre for young people, with steps up its slopes to a rooftop viewpoint.

Did you know? The Pyramid of Tirana opened in 1988 as a museum to Enver Hoxha, never as his tomb; his daughter Pranvera was among its architects.
