About Blloku and the Postbllok Memorial

The former closed quarter of the communist elite, where ordinary Albanians could not enter until 1991, now Tirana's liveliest district of cafés and bars, with a memorial of a bunker, Berlin Wall and prison-camp supports.

Blloku, the Block, was the guarded residential quarter where Enver Hoxha and the communist leadership lived from the end of the Second World War until 1991; ordinary Albanians were forbidden to enter. Many of its villas had been built for Italian officials during the occupation. Hoxha's own villa still stands, but is not open to visitors.

Since 1991 it has become Tirana's trendiest district, full of cafés, bars, restaurants and shops. At its edge, the Postbllok, or Checkpoint, memorial of 2013 brings together a concrete bunker, a fragment of the Berlin Wall and concrete supports from the mine of Spaç, a forced-labour camp for political prisoners.

Did you know? From the end of the Second World War until 1991, ordinary Albanians were forbidden to enter Blloku, the guarded quarter where Enver Hoxha and the leadership lived.
