About New Bazaar
Tirana's old market quarter, with a market hall rebuilt in 2017 under a zigzag glass roof, full of fruit, cheese, honey and raki, and surrounded by colourful restaurants serving traditional Albanian food.
The New Bazaar, Pazari i Ri, lies east of the city centre, in the old merchants' quarter of Tirana, which has been the city's trading heart since the early 17th century. The present market dates from 1931, built after the much larger Ottoman bazaar that once reached Skanderbeg Square was cleared.
Renovated and reopened in 2017, it has a steel-and-glass market hall with a zigzag roof, selling fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, cheese, honey, olives, wine and raki. Around it, colourful buildings house restaurants and bakeries serving dishes such as byrek, tavë kosi and fërgesë. Traders are busiest in the morning.
Did you know? Tirana's New Bazaar dates from 1931, built to replace the much larger Ottoman bazaar that once stretched to where Skanderbeg Square stands today.
