About Tirana Castle and Tanners' Bridge
The surviving Ottoman walls of Tirana's old fortress, now lining a pedestrian street of restaurants and craft shops, and nearby the little 18th-century Tanners' Bridge, a relic of the old town.
Tirana Castle, Kalaja e Tiranës, also called the Fortress of Justinian, is the last fragment of the city's old fortress. Its origins are uncertain, and the link to the Byzantine emperor Justinian is a tradition; the walls that survive, about six metres high, are Ottoman, rebuilt by the Bargjini family, and later the home of the Toptani family from around 1800.
Rediscovered during road works, the walls now line the pedestrian Murat Toptani Street, with restaurants, cafés and craft shops inside. A short walk north is the Tanners' Bridge, Ura e Tabakëve, a small three-arched Ottoman stone bridge of the 18th century, once on the road to the highlands.
