About Kruja

A day trip to the hilltop town where Skanderbeg held out against the Ottomans in the 15th century, with its castle, the Skanderbeg Museum, an Ethnographic Museum in an Ottoman house, and an old craft bazaar.

Kruja, Krujë, about an hour north of Tirana by road, perches on a mountainside at around 600 metres. It was the stronghold of Skanderbeg, who took it in 1443 and held it against several Ottoman sieges, in 1450 and 1466-67, until his death in 1468; it fell to the Ottomans in 1478.

Inside the castle walls stand the Skanderbeg Museum, opened in 1982, the Ethnographic Museum in an Ottoman house of 1764, and remains of a mosque and a hammam. Below runs the old bazaar, a cobbled street of craft shops selling carpets, felt and souvenirs.

Did you know? Skanderbeg took Kruja in 1443 and held it against Ottoman sieges in 1450 and 1466-67; it fell to the Ottomans in 1478, ten years after his death.
