About Grand Park and the Artificial Lake
Tirana's great green park, laid out in the 1950s around an artificial lake built by volunteers, with woodland paths, cycle tracks, war memorials and the zoo, the city's favourite place to walk and jog.
The Grand Park of Tirana, Parku i Madh, lies on the southern edge of the city centre around an Artificial Lake, created in 1955 behind a dam about 400 metres long, built with volunteer labour. The park was laid out in the mid-1950s and covers some 230 to 290 hectares of woods, lawns and paths.
It holds memorials to British and Australian soldiers who fell in the Second World War, a memorial to German soldiers, and a Holocaust memorial unveiled in 2020. The Botanical Garden and the zoo, reopened in 2022, lie at its southern end. It is the city's favourite place for walking, running and cycling.
Did you know? Tirana's Artificial Lake was created in 1955 by damming local streams behind an embankment about 400 metres long, built largely by volunteer labour.
