About Et'hem Bey Mosque and Clock Tower
A small, exquisite mosque of around 1800 on Skanderbeg Square, painted inside and out with rare frescoes of trees, waterfalls and bridges, beside the city's old Clock Tower, which you can climb.
The Et'hem Bey Mosque on Skanderbeg Square was begun around the 1790s by Molla Bey and completed in the early 1820s by his son, Haxhi Et'hem Bey. It is famous for its paintings inside and under its portico, showing trees, waterfalls, bridges and imaginary towns, unusual in mosque decoration. Closed to worship under communism from 1967, it was protected as a monument.
On 18 January 1991, as the regime crumbled, some ten thousand people entered the mosque to pray, a milestone in the return of religious freedom. Beside it stands the Clock Tower, completed around 1822 and renovated in 1928, about 30 metres high, which visitors can climb.
Did you know? The Et'hem Bey Mosque is painted inside and under its porch with landscapes of trees, waterfalls and bridges, rare decoration for a mosque.
