About Skanderbeg Square

Tirana's vast central square, redesigned in 2017 as a traffic-free plaza paved with stones from all over Albania, around the equestrian statue of the national hero Skanderbeg and the great mosaic of The Albanians.

Skanderbeg Square is the heart of Tirana, named after Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, the 15th-century leader of Albanian resistance to the Ottomans. His bronze equestrian statue, 11 metres high, was unveiled in 1968, on the 500th anniversary of his death, on the spot where a statue of Stalin once stood. Around the square rise the Italian-era ministries, the Palace of Culture, home of the opera, and the Et'hem Bey Mosque and Clock Tower.

Redesigned by the Belgian studio 51N4E with the artist Anri Sala, the square reopened in 2017 as a traffic-free plaza paved with stones from across Albania, and won a European prize for public space in 2018. On the National History Museum, closed for renovation, the giant mosaic The Albanians can still be seen.

Did you know? The 11-metre equestrian statue of Skanderbeg was unveiled in 1968, 500 years after his death, on the spot where a statue of Stalin once stood.
